MHP swoops for former aide Tom Hamilton to boost Labour firepower

Hamilton most recently worked as Tom Watson's policy chief.

MHP Communications has moved to boost its Labour credentials by hiring the experienced party adviser Tom Hamilton.

Hamilton makes the move into the lobbying world after approaching a decade working for the Labour party. Until earlier this year, he was head of policy and research for deputy leader Tom Watson.

MHP public affairs chiefs suggested hire came as clients were getting increasingly jittery about Jeremy Corbyn. Joint head of public affairs Jamie Lyons said: “Clients are increasingly asking what a Labour government would mean for their businesses. As one of the most experienced and recent Labour advisers working in our industry, there is nobody better placed to tell them.”

He also claimed: “Tom is joining MHP at a great time. We are growing rapidly, winning a host of exciting new clients and investing in a number of major new hires to further strengthen our team.”

This year, Hamilton co-authored a book about preparing for Prime Minister’s Questions with fellow ex-Labour aide Ayesa Hazarika. Before working for Watson, he was Labour’s head of briefing and rebuttal. He was also head of research when Ed Miliband was Labour leader.

The hire comes two weeks after Edelman also made a bid to strengthen its Labour credentials by hiring the party’s head of briefing Emily Richards

Earlier this year Teneo Blue Rubicon hired Labour's long-serving director of policy and research Simon Jackson, but many other UK public affairs agencies have struggled to find new recruits with experience of working for Corbyn's Labour.
