New public affairs shop Barndoor Strategy has appointed a former aide to top Tory David Davis as managing director.

David Spencer joins the agency set up by former APPC deputy chair Havard Hughes after stints at Chelgate and The Whitheouse Consultancy.

Before entering public affairs he was chief of staff to Davis from 2007 to 2010. Most recently he has worked as a freelance PR consultant and writer based in Taiwan.

Barndoor Strategy is fronted by Hughes, a former public affairs manager at Coventry Building Society and Tory parliamentary candidate, and Roger Evans, a former deputy mayor of London under Boris Johnson.

The appointment comes as the new agency seeks to boost its reach with clients primarily across the financial, tech, and trade sectors.

Hughes commented: “David brings a wealth of industry experience as well as vital international experience.  As managing director his leadership skills will be put to good use building the firm.”
